THE SPOT – A PILGRIMAGE BACK TO MEKKA

I kept hearing about this promising lounge in downtown Newark, NJ with great music, vibrant red curtains, an attentive owner and a vibe that catapults your sensibilities into the West Village. I was skeptical because there have been so many restaurants and lounges touting themselves as “a bit of New York City flavor in New Jersey.” I mean, I fell for it a few times, but NJ lounges are like the boy that cried wolf. There are but so many times I can go to a NJ wanna-be-New-York-City-restaurant/lounge, be disappointed and keep believing in the fairy-tale. But, The Spot has made me a believer.

If you have not visited The Spot in a while, forget what you think you know. The slow service, questionable crowd and limited menu are a part of ancient history. The Spot has hired more waitresses and bartenders to ensure that there is adequate staff to service its customers. It has expanded the menu from semi-interesting finger-foods to include various traditional, southern entrees. And, not sudo-southern entrees — But lip-smacking, make ya wanna smack ya mamma, might give you a heart attack at 30, as good as it gets, soulfood . The culinary experience is heighted by DJ. Max Jerome spinning everything from 80’s hip-hop to today’s rap to R&B.

Basically, the owner of The Spot is smart enough to fill the very obvious night-life void. He has found something that is missing in both NY and NJ. He has filled the vacancy left by Mekka. Mekka (now closed) was nestled into NYC’s alphabet city. It was a tight little spot with fabulous food and an excellent DJ. When I visited Mekka, I felt like I was at a dinner party – food, friends, music and an intimate setting. Mekka embraced a simple concept and turned that concept into something that I miss to this day. Well, until now. For me, The Spot is a pilgrimage back to Mekka.

Sundancing In New Jersey: "Brick By Brick".

Truth be told if you have ever been or lived in Newark, NJ your guard is up at all time. I can't really explain the feeling I'm currently describing but deep down you all know what its all about. Let's be clear, I grew up in "The Bricks". I spent my entire life dreaming to move out of the city that I called my home for most of my life. I wanted out of Newark at an early age not because I was this impoverished child or nothing outrageous like that, I just felt that there was something else out there. When I grew up in Newark we had no gang life we only had Avenue or Street Beef. For example, Chancellor vs Lyons, Bergen vs Hawthorne. How did we settle it. Fist Fights or Football. I've seen stabbings, carjackings, knockouts, robberies anything you can think of. My generation are the descendants of the Newark riots, meaning we gets nothing. I feel like I have beaten the odds. Now I give back.

Twenty years later, I'm watching my television and view a documentary about Newark NJ. I'm like "ok" this is a must see. So I did, and DJed the event as well. I really don't want to give a review until I see all the segments of the show.

Oddly, people who have never even lived or been here are the biggest critics. Very Ironic. There is nothing worse than talking about a film you have never seen. This is a must see. The first part is a little "fluffy" I won't front, but I'm almost certain its going to go deeper in the hood, which is what everyone wants to see. (pictured Max-Jerome and John Forte)

Tonight's performance features House of Waters, an eclectic band of virtuoso musicians led by pioneering hammered dulcimer player Max ZT, classified by Time Out New York as "the Jimi Hendrix of the hammered dulcimer"; The Marvin Sewell Group, led by acclaimed jazz guitarist Marvin Sewell, who has worked with Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, with cellist Diedre Murray, and with bassist Fred Hopkins; Dapp Theory, an ensemble that blends contemporary funk, groove, hip hop and spoken word with elements of jazz, led by pianist-composer Andy Milne; and Newark-based DJ Max-Jerome, currently heard live on 99.5 WBAI-FM on The Underground RailRoad and The Last Hip Hop Radio Show.

This summer’s series is co-sponsored by Chase, BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), Richmond County Savings Foundation, Berkeley College, Boost Mobile, Bud Light and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Sounds of the City will feature a vendor marketplace in NJPAC’s arrival court. Vendors from around the area will set up tents each Thursday evening for concert-goers to shop at.

Sounds of the City brings together thousands of people from different ethnic groups and communities who live and work in Newark, as well as from beyond the City’s limits. Created in October 1998, this free after-work music series was the brainchild of a group of Newark
residents, musicians, students and NJPAC staff, whose purpose it was to help fulfill the Arts Center’s mission to be a place of access and involvement for local artists and audiences.

“Sounds of the City is a highlight for NJPAC every year. I recall, that a few months ago I made an Obama rant that actually manifested into truth. Just recently, his economic stimulus idea actually worked, and I'm quite impressed that he is keeping to his word and let his actions speak more than his words. I still cannot believe we have a Black President.

What have I been doing?

Good question, just working, doing the dj hobby, taking photos, and basically getting things off my chest and moving forward with my life. My blogs for 2009 will basically be travels that I've encountered opposite things I can invite you too. I mean let's be honest with each other, I invite heads to come out and enjoy life (with me of course) but they would rather send an email or IM asking "how was the show".

Honestly, what I hate "the most" is the people who ask me about 10,000 questions then never show.

Those days are over my friend....I'm officialy Kaiser...This blog is going to be brief, have fun and always whistle while you work.

My Brain On Drugs: Getting Too High On Obama.

By the time you read this, chances are Senator Obama will be the first black president. Is the African American society really ready for this so called "change". Honestly, I cannot think of any other culture in the world that puts our own people on a pedestal only to knock them off when something hits the fan. It's just like someone who wears a football jersey of the superbowl champions but never watched one game. Bandwagonitis. Who will be the first person to tell there white boss to "kiss they ass" just because this man is in office. If you don't have his cell number, I suggest you think twice. I'm not writing this to simply add any more political jargon you dont need to this situation but, as you can see based on all of this media hype (especially the racism card), people are not ready for this. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy "that one" will be in office however; lets be clear it's backing up what he said. No taxes, health care for everyone, and lowering gas prices. Have you seen some of the media coverage lately showing the true color of "America", they are trying every trick in the book trying to scare someone into confusion. They called this man a communist, socialist, muslim, & UnAmerican. This man was carried by a white woman for nine months but they seem to have forgotten that part. If Obama was white there wouldn't be any of this. White America was warned that this was going to happen, and it really is. I guess I will be cutting you off now in my SUV on 280. Oh yes, its coming so buckle up. For example, let's all be honest with each other, especially in the white collar working community, we all know that white men and white women make way more than everyone else (which automatically makes them smarter in any corporate environment) yet every idea a "simple minded" person of color is shunned off as "I'm not understanding", or the infamous, "scratching of the head routine". Then one month later that same idea is then presented by the white counterpart and they are considered a genius. Man Listen. Don't vote for Obama just because he is black, vote on him because you truly believe. Now if we can only work on white women holding there purses in elevators.....

Understanding The HipHop Honors: The Remix.

As we slowly near the end of 2008, I still to this day find myself enjoying yet pondering the oddball selection process for VH1's HipHop Honors. I can imagine and also envision the endless meetings behind the scenes with so-called hiphop purists only to be overruled by the boss, and then head straight to the water cooler for corporate backstabbing. You have to understand that everyone thinks that they are a HipHop authority. Even the honorees in my eyes cannot keep a straight face when someone like Lupe Fiasco or Juelz Santana have no problem performing but cannot recite the words of classic material. It's sort of a double edged sword because don't you think if you are an artist (take Juelz for example) who can take the time out to show the world you wasn't robbed in London to at least practice the performance somewhere in a remote location. For the new jacks reading this, take note of HipHop business. Shows like this are planned exactly one year in advance not counting DVD. They will accept the check but won't understand the balances. Of course, we as a culture cannot be upset that someone even thought about putting a quality show on the air, but I'm really starting to believe this is all about availability. It's agreed this topic is an old issue but personally it weighs heavy on my heart whenever the show airs because I want to have a legitimate reason to be late for work the next day. Look at me, I'm still thinking about it.

However, I still feel guilty that so many acts of the past of relevance didn't get their just due yet. Lets take a look at the schematic and review the inconsistencies and its reasoning:

Ok, :taking a deep breathe: fellow HipHoppers across the world, before you "overhear" a conversation at Starbucks and then you start running off your mouth get your facts straight first. In my opinion, even the Republicans are scratching there heads on this one. First of all, McCain pulled her out of a "hat" like "here you go". Well guess what "Mr. McCain" playing with the American public isn't a magic trick. I know every person in the world thinks your "witty" but I can't wait to see the "smarts" on this one. Now before you pass judgement, we are only here for the facts. There was a time in my life when I used to actually be upset when every single channel was filled with election broo hah hah, but this woman is on some subliminal jabs. She called Obama a community organizer? Wow.

She basically shitted on every ancestor who "organized" something. Mad shouts to John Adams, LOL.....

Mrs. Palin (besides you looking damn good in a swimsuit), this is not a beauty pageant this is an election, and guess what you just gave that "community organizer" more ether.

It's time for Obama to head to the studio to make that "diss" excuse me, change.

This is like the first time I really every spoke about this but when the Last HipHop Radio Show was created it was actually a way to keep me in college, so I could finish my degree. But since I spoke "so reckless" and painfully honest about the society and NJ HipHop Culture, it became a cult classic show. (pictured from l to r: Max-Jerome, Ice-T & CoCo)

Why am I saying this? Its simple. I have people "bump into me" and be like, "yo, I recorded half of your shows, if you ever need copies let me know". Things like that always throw you back.

There wasn't a real formula as to why the show was so successful, but on a personal level, I was obsessed with actual voices....I mean did you ever actually hear my cast of characters speak??

Does anyone sound like Priority? Or Andreas (he sounded like a robot) and we were always arguing. Some of it was fake, others were straight up arguments.

Anyway, You can expect production from (not telling, LOL)... Again, The Last HipHop Radio Show-"FreeStyles & Rarities" (1999-2007) Im not ever going to post this again........im going for classic status on this one.... Because Im sitting on hundreds of freestyles (literally) the process is very strong. Im talking shit from Masta Ace to Ron Browz, Mr. Len.....etc....

I broke one of my own promises...never to work at Rock Steady. But I couldn't help it. It was all for the love of New Jersey HipHop. You know what's interesting is that I can't believe that one year has past since my post about "not working". Well this time it was for the music and that call from Black 45. I've been on a hiatus of sorts, working on beats to keep up with my peers. Oh, just to let you know, out of all my dreams and accolades that I have achieved as a hiphop journalist & radio host in the tri-state it was actually having one of my brainchild's come to light at a venue that was well worth it. Thats right, Meet The Producers has made it big time, and they are not looking back. Word to the wise, you can't remove an original. Meet The Producers started off with three people. Max-Jerome, DJ Priority & Black 45. In 2004, this concept was something like that of an anomolie, and no one understood what it was all about. It started with 4 people in the audience to 400 heads (adding that factor). But Black 45 and Priority will tell you, I'm a leader, and I see things that others don't.

You see, imitation is the best form of flattery, but you couldn't possibly leave one of the creators out of something that was so monumental (to me at least). A lot of people don't seem to realize that when Crazy Legs and company came through to Newark in 2004, I was the only cat "taking pictures" for the entire state, and people dont forget that. I know them, and they know me, its sorta like a working history. I walk around town like I don't have any juice only to reveal situations like this. Similar to the movie Hancock, when he went to prison and they thought he lost his powers. Remember that scene, and you remember the outcome. Overall the show was dope, I hooked up with thatshiphop.com, met Ms. Steele (looks so much better in person), and meeting the ultimate white woman CoCo. Honestly, tt was more like a family reunion, (l to r: Priority, Young Roc, Algorithm, & Marco Polo) and they totally understood the concept. Again, I met CoCo. (Nuff Said). I put a few pictures up on my little myspace page (yes I do check it-I have a few shows coming up). "This is not a spoiler".

There are no big conspiracy theories here: The movie was very good. This is not a "bandwagon" co-sign, this movie is the real deal. I don't know about the other HipHop Nerds outthere (I guess Im the only one, oh well) else reading this, but that wasn't a Animated CGI 18 Wheeler that got tossed on its ass, that was the real deal. Did anyone peep the Joker, "running with the brothers". The story line was dope yet somewhat close to that of the Dark Knight, and whenever I saw Harvey Dent flip that coin I thought about my man in "No country for Old men" . But at least we know where the concept came from. You know what's really interesting to me is: Would there even be a "movie industry" without the use of comic book story lines?

You see, I run with a bunch of haters, and yes we hate on everything. Even the popcorn....

Sometimes I get jealous when I over hear people who are not really big comic book hero fans talk about things they know nothing about.

"People are saying Heath Ledger is getting an oscar". Yeah ok.

I won't front this is by far the best joker ever. He literally was the movie.

They explained everything all the way down to the penthouse in which Mr. Wayne was living.

In hindsight, even though the original Batman franchise story lines are mad bubble gum, they are always dead on when its time to pick the characters. Jim Carrey was the man when he played the Riddler.

I gotta run, because I have to take care of a few things, but I really want to know what you thought about the movie, and who you think the best Batman was. I personally feel (please dont laugh) that Christian Bale and yes George Clooney were the best.

I'm still up and sober, not cool.

I got to Park Street Studios around 8:00p.m, and for the first time in a while, I was actually nervous. For example, whenever I arrived at this venue, there is normally about 10 to 15 people waiting to arrive early ready to network with me (they know I don't talk much when I'm working) but no one was in sight.

I hooked up with infamous Roy and we chatted it up a little bit, and the bouncer (who drank all of our liquor at the last show) apologized.

I set up the sound, then around 9:00p.m. the crowd began to roll in. It seemed like the party was outside, because it was so humid. The performances were very good especially Siyah who came through with new material.

But how can we forget about KingShon & J.S. Krillz. Whenever you do emcee battles, at times they are the best judges of music ever. No complaints. A suprise appearance from Mentplus, and Mooka Jerz (check for her in Elite Magazine) was refreshing which all capped out a wonderful night for Jersey HipHop.

If you attended this battle, I really would like to hear your honest feedback on the show, and how you felt. Remember anonymous posts are allowed, but the truth shall set you free.

Hot 97 announced the cancellation of its long-running and often controversial show "Miss Jones in the Morning." As early as July 21st, the show's "AM Drive" time slot will now be split between two shows with a national following.

In a statement issued by the station's parent company Emmis Communications, listeners in the New York Tri-State area tuning in at 5am will catch Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg, which currently airs on Saturday and Sunday mornings. With co-host Peter Rosenberg having gained his popularity conducting interviews on YouTube, the show continues to enjoy a strong online presence. That popularity is boosted by Cipha Sounds' history in New York and status as an MTV personality.

At 7am, Rosenberg will sign off, leaving Cipha Sounds to pair up with the nationally syndicated "Big Boy's Neighborhood. The Los Angeles-based show, which once aired in New York on rival station Power 105.1 FM, signed a multi-year syndication deal with ABC Radio Networks.

"This provides a very special AM show with both local and national talent with less edge, a little more celebrity, and a whole lot of entertainment," the statement proclaims.

The move comes as Emmis prepares to test Aribtron's newest radio research: the Portable People Meter. The PPM system will track the listening behavior and history of each person studied by having each of them where a small device that will record the information. The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) opened its doors to the public, permanently changing the scene in South Orange and adding to the landscape of arts leaders in New Jersey.

Almost 10 years in the making, SOPAC evolved from an idea of then Village of South Orange President Bill Calabrese to bring a movie theater to town. After further discussions and exploration, he championed a bigger dream – to establish and open a full performing arts center. The center would present elite artists in an intimate theater and feature cinema and event space. It would create jobs, offer arts education and spur new partnerships. Finally it would anchor the downtown business district, become a community gathering point and a regional point of arts pride.

SOPAC has achieved those goals in just a short time. In its first ten months, SOPAC featured superstars Nancy Wilson, Olympia Dukakis, Paquito D’Rivera and Yo-Yo Ma among others. Praise came in from media like the New York Times and Star Ledger and from important politicians such as New Jersey’s Senate President, Richard Codey, Essex County Executive Joseph D’Vincenzo and Governor Corzine himself, who selected SOPAC to host a public forum open to all in the state.

SOPAC hosted and co-led cultural planning meetings to help shape the future of South Orange as an arts destination. After all, you read your gossip directly from the tabloids that you work for I might add. Let's also not forget the way Dave May's bodied you on your own show and you had to go to commercial, now one year later, you have a column with HipHop Weekly owned by Mays and Benzino. If you can't beat them join them. You at times have even given the Hot 97 phone number over the air waves proving you are a listener of her show (and also others) in the morning, just to get updated. Favortism at its finest. How does it feel to get free money. Your excuse for your wrong phone numbers is that you used to work there. Ok, but your last job was in Philly? You better smarten up pay attention Ms. Williams because we are (true hiphop heads) listening closely on how not to conduct yourself on radio. Best believe I'm coming for your head. You also cried to the media (after you were terminated, UPN 9) about how you got railroaded but you are giving out false information over the air. Ready for Summer 2008? I think I am. I'm slowly taking it down, redesigning my mind set, cleaning the slate and ready for my mid-life crisis. However, lets set the record straight to my "well wishers". Sadly, there won't be any "Local HipHop" shows from me anytime soon, homeboys & homegirls, until late June or July. I'm on vacation (my son pictured left) with my boxers on like Camron so "take a shot of the pool". Didn't we go through this already? I won't even front, I do have some wonderful things coming up but getting the same questions thrown at me time and time again does get kinda corny. The only thing now is waiting for a reality show thats going to represent the true mogul in me. Did you ever wonder: How is the family? Did you cop any new kicks (nah), when can I stop by to help you on the MP? Questions like that is what I'm looking for. This is a good thing when its time to see someone's true colors. Alas music is in my blood, and yes its really hard for me to sit in the audience, so basically I'm contradicting myself. Yo, 2006-2007 have been some pretty tough years for me representing the Jersey Scene, I needed a break. Lets be real show promoters, you and I both know that you can help an artist to the bloody end, but make one mistake with sound, or a cd skip, they act like they never knew you. You get frustrated. It's like a double edge sword. I don't know why its like that but it "like that". I said to myself that staying home with the fam, doing dj gigs (when needed) and producing is the way to go at this point. Not only that, its very therapeutic just to fall back and let other people do shows. I love networking like the next person, but being a HipHop dad is where its at. Anyone else feeling this way?

Part I. Who says you can't find good music online these days. With just a few random bored clicks, you have once again found yourself on my page. Isn't life grand.
Last night I ventured out to visit my people: DJ AB. He can be heard every Sunday Nite 10:30pm-4:30am with online streaming online at www. NJ. com/WRSU or www.wrsu.org (Request line at 732932-8800). There is one thing that AB and I have in common. We speak our mind. Thats why I love his show. He says what he does, and does what he feels. Thats what makes true HipHop shows so authentic....I put a set together (along with DJ Priority) and I played some of my favorite tracks (right click and save as) that evening by the late great Camu Tao. When I found interesting about Camu was that I never met the brother but if I did, I could tell I would be running in his circle. His rhymes, persona, and unique style has led me to believe that he will be one of those emcees that you will study from years to come. Part II. The secret is kinda out, and trust me we are not promoting this show, but that's the whole idea. Its less police. So if you enjoy Good Music and Random Hot White Women, this would be the place for you. Tame One will be performing on the low, so watch out for that. (Plus a few more suprises).

The irony of it all is so amazing. I'm on my way to the liquor store for my usual round up of Colt 45 and I completely forgot about the going away party for mastermind GDP. Yo I'm dead serious. I looked across the street and all I saw was like 100 people in front of division east. Performances included: Rew Mec, Daniel Joseph, & John Robinson (to name a few). Shouts to DJ Prime.....(you did it again homey, dope set). Anyway, when I arrived to the spot, it was so cool to see faces I haven't seen in months. However, I'm not going to dwell on it too much but for the first time in one year it was so dope to be in the audience at a Division East show, its such a good feeling. Personally, it's more networking again, and checking out the women (oh my damn), and letting someone else deal with the stress of sound and mics. Isn't it strange when you say, "Yo, I don't want to see this person" then when you see them its like wow, there goes my people. It's like that sometimes. As far as the performances, the person who stood out for me was The Man From Somewhere Else. You know, the funny thing is that we laugh and joke, check out the spot, but I've never seen dude actually perform. He has the darkest sickest wit about himself, it felt like the joke was on us when we watched him perform. You really need to check out his work. For example, if you listen to him close enough, he has like 3 different meanings to at least one of his rhymes, with NO HOOK. Shape came through and blessed the stage but played it cool when he experienced technical difficulties. When you have to wrap a mic wire around sixteen times to get it going, Whitney Houston you have a problem. On the sexy side of things, I found out there was a few young ladies who love my dj sets, and were pretty bummed out that I couldn't hang out with them later on. (Please Note: This goes back to my previous comment about being in the audience, because you have no idea who is digging you). I personally don't like going places and getting buzzed with people I don't know if you know what I'm saying. So shouts out to M & C.

Oh yes ladies and gentlemen, your eyes are not deceiving you, that bootleg shot directly from the idiot box is the one and only, "M-Dolla" on one of the worst shows on BET: 106 & Park. So why was I watching it?? Well it wasn't for Funny Shaped Rocsi (Free will always be my heart) or cheerleader Terrance more like, "Oh my that was a good question, I wasn't prepared to think". (Madonna). Nuff Said. A lot of recording artists in the industry currently are desperately finding new ways yet scrambling to the masses to make sure that their record sells at least 40,000 units in the first week. Its sort of like re-invention but not really. Sad but true. But here is the catch that no seems to conceptually understand except us. Her album will sell. A lot of these re-run artists are not on the same level as Madonna, she is worldwide with it. So when your favorite radio show is giving out soundscan numbers, don't be fooled, thats only the United States. There was a time in our lives when someone like Janet Jackson, Snoop Dogg or Jay Z would go platinum in a week. I guess those HipHop Panels did work after all. The most interesting thing about "M-Dolla" is that she doesn't need the money, and living lovely off the publishing rights of Maverick Records. Ever since the "BorderLine" days she has been a "trendsetter of sorts" without even knowing it. Is it because the album is more "urban" than her previous work?Now she is a mom of three talking about Horses and living in London. Her formula is simple, lay in the cut find the hottest producers and artists "at that time", make bank, then jet. I remember my reaction when she tongue kissed Britney & Christina, now that damn good TV. "These are my children". Haha, Dope. I remember watching (hold your breathe kiddies), New York Hot Tracks (Channel 7) back in the day just to see, "Lucky Star", "Like A Virgin" then moving forward to MTV and Video Music Box just to check out "Poppa Don't Preach" and the list goes on and on. Every year she would come out with an album with entirely different sound, but I don't know what this vision was all about. No one is checking for 40 year old women anymore. My only question is: Why get on 106 now after all of these years?. She has the Black and White audience on lock?? Her pockets are deep and her production team (Timbaland, Pharrell, etc) is sick. There is always a trick up this womans sleeve. Stay Tuned.

Zone Coasting Light: A Night For The Music.

I found myself spinning at Tru Sound: Live at the Loft (Montclair-NJ). 8th Light Presented this venture for the Cool School. Real Talk this organization is for children who are not necessarily poor or rich but more getting them involved with music. Thats what I got from it at least. Conceptually the show was good, but the crowd forgot what they were there for. It was for the education of todays future youth showing them that the past leads the future. Wikipedia True Story: High School Kids (sound guys for the evening to the right) of today have no idea who a Tribe Called Quest or Rakim is. I proved it. So the next time you see a teenie bopper with a Flat Top or Mohawk talking about they an "80's Baby", just stare & laugh. Thats all you can do. Lets do the math hot shots: If you were born in 80's that means you did your dirt and spent your high school years in the the 90's. If you were born in the 90's that means you are living your teenage years now, am I right? If you were born in the 70's that means you are in your 30's. Thats just me. However, I spent about a week trying to figure out what to play for the kids but by far this was my most challenging show for 2008. Mad shouts to Dana and a sexy hot number (I forgot her name though) who held it down professionally. The show was Hosted by Purple Haze and featured acts like PVD & John Robinson, The Co-Champs (More Singular, I think someone was missing), and the highlight for me was Walkin Contradiction. I caught up with the organizer and we plan to work on a few things in the future, so watch out for that.

Revisited: Seeing Reality At Seed Gallery.

If you think it might be HipHop overkill to revisit the same place within a six week time span, its time to change that cycle. Why do we do that? Anyway, Kreme Clothing had a launch party for there newly opened Newark, NJ store at Seed Gallery, and it was official. More than 200+ people converged at the venue for viewing of Art (pictured left), Free Liquor, Beautiful Women, & Music. In the immortal words of Ice Cube: "Today Was A Good Day". The excitement for me (of course) was bumping into C-Reality & Dan The Man. C recently found out that I was the engineer yet "opening set" for this event. C-Righteous switched his game plan for sound, and made the right decision by rolling with me. Being prepared and always professional is an understatement when it comes to this man. Back to the music. Honestly, I've been playing with C-Reality for a few years, and its always an "eye-opening" experience. There is always a trick up this mans sleeve. We actually took our traditional walk for coffee and found out that some people dont know how to make it (inside joke), and our culture is not respecting the Golden Era. They only like wearing the clothes from the 80's. For the record, I really feel heads dig my DJ sets (God Knows I Try) but when this cat gets on, its lights out. Granted I held my own for the first hour and a half, but when he did his James Brown dedication, I was in Awe. The ladies danced all night. The vibe in the spot had an "eery" lower Manhattan feel where the women were checking the guys out but really didnt say anything. Being the silent observer, I just kept losing track of all the hotness that kept entering the venue. Security was on point, and the weather held up so it made for a good night. Say Word.

Seeds & Roots: Grow In New Jersey.

I had a unique opportunity to check out the Jersey Roots/Seed Gallery: "Power in Numbers" Art & HipHop Exhibition. Since I've been a recluse as of late (I'm working on Production & Photography), it was really good to "Network", "Politick", and meet some fresh new faces. I won't even front, the Garden State music scene waits for no one even me for that matter. It's argreed yet; safe to say that there is nothing like a venue that promotes new talent and powerful positivity. Basically, I was there to perform with www.myspace.com/rewmec who did the best job in my eyes (Favortism is strong when I'm on stage, LOL) and view the work of James "Jazz" Sheehan whose is extremely talented. Positively: Upstairs/Downstairs, some standouts for me were DJ Big & Bad (one person for those checking), The Second 2 None Family, [some pictured to the right] (Note: the Dunks-Jordans selections were out of this world, so if you think you collect, keep your mouth shut until you see what they have to offer), and the WairFair Clothing line. In true Jersey fashion, the show wouldn't go past without our usual late start up time (Doors opened at 8p.m. & kicked off around 11:43p.m.) Luckily, I got there around 9:40p.m. and after a while, I could really feel that "freezer like atmosphere", and you know how we do when we get cold. Of course the show (thank god it wasn't one of mine) did have a few bumps & bruises like the shaving of minutes of the performers. For example, there was a clear on stage rift at one point because it seemed to me that the artists were told one thing, then flipped into another. Who knows maybe the Seed Gallery was just running out of time. Lets be clear, mad shouts to Host Hi-Coup who unfortunately had to be the bearer of this bad news (including myself and Rew) when sets were cut short. At the end of the day, everyone was professional about it but, I couldn't help overhear some patrons feeling slightly cheated because the cover charge was a whopping 15$. (That wasn't a typo). As common sense kicks in its apparent to me that the show should of started at 10:30p.m and everyone would of gotten fair time. But that's just me. But then again its a double edge sword because there is no telling what is going on behind the scenes. Maybe they were waiting for an artist or waiting for more heads to show, who knows. All I know is whenever I put a show together, I do a physical body count to make sure there is enough people to start and again, (stop me if I'm wrong). 10:30p.m. was about right to get that situation started. Other artist that I had a chance to check out were: Hasan Salaam (Extremely dope as usual), KMF Conflict, Akir (Good to see you again), and Jerseys Own Mu Duckets.

New Brunswick To Brooklyn: HipHop Lives......

Now that the storm is settling over in Montclair (great show for those that attended), I thought it would be great let everyone know that I have been keeping my word to myself and thats actually trying to spin more. I honestly do DJ as a hobby, its very therapeutic. Thank you so much for the support and props on my set(s).

Now its time for me to get re-involved. It took people like 8 years to realize that I play good music (I stuck to my guns) and I feel that my sound is coming around.

As a promoter, I've dwindled myself down to a lowkey wonderful beat battle that you need to check out as well.

I'm proud of this fact (even though I was in denial about my sound) because why go to a club to hear the same music you heard on the radio all day? Makes no sense: Just like Bill O'Reilly.

So lets get drunk and Merry and talk about the guy.

Division East Records: GDP Gets Involved.

Montclair, NJ. I had an opportunity to check out GDP's Involvement album release party at Division East yesterday, and let me tell you; I was the "bomb diggy" (do they still say that?). No super power longwinded blog today just the facts. For all beer drinkers across the world did anyone ever notice that if you drink two beers in 100 degree weather, you get buzzed? That explains the vibe & atmosphere of the party, one good fun time. Good luck with your album homey. (l to r: GDP & C-Minus pictured)

Rocking Steady 2007: In The Pouring Rain?

Newark, New Jersey. I have a confession to make, I'm a Rock Steady Fanatic. I'm proud of this fact because its not so much the HipHop overtones that are the associated with the event, its more like a "ritual" for new and true-blue heads. This is there second year performing in "The Bricks" and I'm very happy. The old me would of been salty that I wasn't part of the show but I'd rather see DJ Q-Bert, JS-1, & Rob Swift on the 1's and 2's any day. FYI: Q-Bert revealed a new scratching technique today, and no one is touching it! Its comprised of scratching with both records! Honestly, This year was a bit different for me because I brought my son who is now five. I really don't have a long winded story to tell however; the pictures I've taken will pretty much outlive me, and I hope my son will be proud of me when he realizes all of the famous people he has taken flicks with in his lifetime. Now for the drama. We all know black people are scared rain but we actually stayed this time. Speaking of staying home, Dana Dane my brother you were the "Nightmare". What were you thinking? You can't blame it on sound, lack of audience, zero. Worse performance of the night we only clapped because we felt sorry for you. People might review this and feel that I'm speaking negative about him but "Old Heads" know how pompous, and arrogant this cat was back in the day. He is truly the original Kanye West. Granted, you always hear horror stories of how you meet celebs, but he treated me the worse. The artist in question always seem forgets the encounter but consumers never forget. Deep down he is probably thinking he should of done better. Naughty By Nature brought back memories, EPMD killed it, (are truly legends) & Keith Murray was a pleasant surprise. .

Randomness #1. Leave it to devout sneaker heads to wait for my demise/retirement just to say "hello" to me. For the record, get to the point, and ask me have the sneakers been sold. Fret not, the coveted sneakers that you have been lurking on have been "adiosed" (is that a word?). Love, Ebay American Style.

Randomness #2. I'm writing this blog today out of sheer boredom, randomness, determination, finger pointing, and my total disgust for the HipHop Game at this point. A-List HipHop celebs are correct: You have to be strong, ready to fight, find your own way in, and retreat at times just to get "your mind right". Currently, I've decided to fall back. Randomness #3. I'm sitting, "chilling" here actually looking forward to purchase the Village Voice so I can start my hunt for a Broadcasting/Marketing/New Media position. Question: Am I the only person doing this, because its a passion of mine. When people "bump" into me, I normally have the "stone face" on because you have to watch what you say. Any inkling of negativity (especially in New Jersey) can be taken the wrong way. Trust me and take it from me. Sadly, A lot of people have "left me for dead" yet respect my talent, because of this dream I have however; don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get "salty" from time to time, so bear with me, you just might learn something. God I love my blog. For the record all of my HipHop African American job seekers from NJ looking to work in NY, save your bus money, employment for an advertising company in NYC is 100% out of the question. I remember sitting in a recent interview (4 months ago to be exact) and I dropped/pitched out 3 ideas to them only to be told they would "never work" now I'm looking at two of them in print as you read this. Sadly, Advertising/New Media job interviews are like chess because they go in with the intent of stealing your ideas, then never getting the job. So basically, you have no "proof" that the conversation even manifested. Remember back in the day at the club (Hoboken/Midtown Manhattan) and you may notice that sexy drunk Italian chick would utter words like "yo yo yo" mimicking your every move? More than likely she works at an ad agency. FYI: White Men/Women under 30 are only allowed to make a decent living in the city, and you can take that shit to the bank! (Ever try looking for an apartment in Manhattan, try 2100 dollars). It took me years to figure it out, but; its the dirty little secret that no one wants to admit. Remember the Dame Dash encounter (see blog below)? Guess what, I actually landed that job position, but to no amazement to me I didn't get it. Explanation, I was informed, "they were going in a different direction". Hah, Translation: You fit the bill, your totally qualified but your black, we thought you were white and we are not going to pay you five figures. What we can do is offer you the position so you can "assist" in the new direction. Wow-How cool is that?? Different direction my ass. I don't make these things up!!!

Randomess #4. Sadly, (this is very true) I didn't experience racism until later on in life. I thought that every one was equal. No, I really did. See, I'm one of those kids who grew up in a White Neighborhood, only to move to the "Hood". I now hate my white friends (who dont know me any more btw) who are making a good living in HipHop (mind you) , my asian friends, etc etc. For example, people didn't even realize that I have quietly, yet; literally taken myself out of the local scene. You see, I'm the guy you love to hate. Silence is golden. People rap, People produce, I write. Look at me, I'm rolling skating then blogging? Around this time of the evening I'm either at the radio show, having wild sex (just kidding), or doing a gig. However; at this stage in time, I'm ready to pass the torch and finish out my life in Suburbia. For example (also a side note), I remember spinning one night only to receive 20 dollars when I was promised 200$. For all of you DJ's don't you hate to be sold on something, spin your heart out, then get shorted? It's the worse feeling in the world. But; this is what I loved about the business, you have to let people dig their own grave, even me for that matter. The thing about Jersey is tough is because we love our State but want to work in the City.

I'm going to let you cats in on a little secret, I've been trying to get a full time job doing what I love in NYC, and thats write for a major magazine, or work for a commercial radio station. I was told by "someone" that a underground HipHop show would never work on Hot 97 only to hear Rosenberg on Sunday Nights, with a strong following. Talk about transition from Reggae to Underground HipHop. Yes, these aspirations are still a chance but; basically I see no shining light. Stay positive they say, how can you be when the deck is already stacked. Do you know how many seminars and networking parties I've attended only to be told, "keep grinding". Sometimes I feel like I got my degree for nothing. I honestly make less than a high school drop out. Unfortunately; based on my own experience at most of these interviews is that you either have to be: A friend of the "family" that runs NYC. Its really depressing to see the people that you helped train to in fact utter to me, "keep trying". I will say this, from here on, I will be posting all of my interviews in this blog.

Max-Jerome Versus Dame Dash: He Won.

"I Call This Pose: The Act Like You Not Looking But Looking Look". A funny story on the way to the Met. Just kidding. Did that go over your head? I hope not HipHop Heads. Your eyes are not deceiving you, I met one of my favorite HipHop Entreprenuers and I didn't even get a chance to tell him what I do. I don't know if you knew this about me, but I'm a perfectionist. I almost knew the person holding that camera was going to botch the job. Or maybe Dame was giving me the "Hurry up Nigga, You Ain't Nobody I Got Shit To do Pose". Guess what the funny part is...I had my entire lifes history in that black bag convieniently strapped over my shoulder. I'm going to call it fate because Max-Jerome and Mr. Dash were meant to cross paths however; I missed my opportunity to tell him what I do in the State Of New Jersey. I mean don't you believe in being at the right place at the right time? This cat was meant to meet me, and I screwed it up. I'm the Ultimate Hustler Mr. Dash but then again you knew that. See Mr. Dash is a "Hand Shake", "Gut Instinct" type of dude, and I'm very hard to read. I mean he's rich, I'm broke, so why was he standing there along with Kareem Biggs? I'm sitting on one thousand ideas, and I didn't get a chance to present them. Heres why: 1. If you note the door to your left I was headed upstairs (NYC) to a job interview for a mere 5 Figure Communication Position to write scripts for Customer Service Reps. My interview was 11:30a.m. and I was late exactly two minutes because the OG was standing right there. I was like "fuck that", they not gonna hire my black ass anyway, besides there is no way there going to pay me what they can pay another perfectly good white man who knows nothing double anyway, sad but true. I wont get proven wrong on this position, when I came in I felt like I was damn pizza delivery guy. Not one black person in site, so I just sucked it up, knocked out the interview because based on they way they treated me, "I got the picture" get it? Where is my cuffie. Be strong, be confident, Maybe Dame was a clue or a hint. He claims he is for the "UnderDog" and I kinda believe him. Lastly because I desperately needed proof, I'm still sitting here pondering should I put the worst picture up on the planet. My day went like this....some of you guys know me as the "quiet cat" who watches and does his little HipHop thing. Well, for the past I would say two years I've been searching for a HipHop Marketing Job. No one wants to hire me. Here's why-I Don't Know. Am I going to the wrong places to find a job? All of these HipHop Marketing positions for people like me are friends of friends and I'm hoping one day someone will realize they are sitting on a gold mind. If anyone out there knows Dame Dash tell him that he met Max-Jerome. His public persona is that of an asshole, but I dont believe it, he may be anal on certain things-I'm assuming someone has to be the "bad guy" in this business, and he wants shit to go right. I know he is still wondering why he sold his stake in Roc-a-Wear for 22 Mil Cash, then Hov sold it for 204 Million. Looking for thoughts and comments on this one, I haven't posted in like 5 months so I deserve it.

The Goat Cafe in South Orange embraces the positive aspects of hip-hop with the innovative series “Electric Relaxation.”Curated and produced by Pat Van Dyke, the show attempts to revisit the roots of hip-hop when the music focused exclusively on fun and creativity. The series is hosted by 8thW1, who performs at every show and described himself as the “mediator between the crowd and the energy on stage.” Shows are divided into two halves to most effectively provide an outlet for creative expression. Aspiring performers are given the chance to showcase their talent during the first half of the show, followed by a short break in which the DJ, Max Jerome, spins music. The second half of the show consists of four to five performances by featured MCs, which have included CyMarchall Law, Born Wreckless, Emilio Rojas, Silent Knight and Scienz of Life.The name of the show, “Electric Relaxation,” refers to a track by the rap group A Tribe Called Quest.“They are the epitome of everything that hip hop culture represents,” Van Dyke said, adding that they embody social consciousness in a creative and fun way.According to Van Dyke, it is important to display hip-hop through a positive environment in order to promote the music based on the real roots of the genre. “For many people, rap music carries a negative or violent connotation,” he said “We’re just looking to have a good time and promote a creative environment where artists and fans can network and display their craft.”8thW1 described the creation of hip-hop as people having fun and doing something different, taking what was already there and making it something to speak for them.“Everything’s about a good vibe,” he said.Based on the genre’s origins, the show hopes to recreate the positive vibe of the music through showcasing talent free from profanity and vindictive lyrics suitable for all ages.Van Dyke’s own band, PVD, accompanies the performances of each show, in the role of a house band. While they originated as a jazz-fusion group, they lean more towards hip-hop styles for “Electric Relaxation,” promoting to their own audience as well as to new fans that discover them through the show.When describing the focus of the music, Van Dyke said, “I wouldn’t say old school hip-hop, but not necessarily what the music stands for today on a commercial level.” With performances scheduled that include some of Seton Hall’s own, Van Dyke urges the whole community to become involved with the charismatic series.“Electric Relaxation” takes place every second and fourth Thursday of every month at The Goat Café at 8 p.m.There have been two shows so far, with the third occurring Thursday. Halloween History: Did you know that The Celts had a strong belief in the afterlife and they believed that the spirits of those who died in the preceding year came back on this day to possess the living bodies for the next year?

This was the only hope of the spirits for afterlife. But those who were living did not want to be possessed. So to repel the evil spirits the common custom was to extinguish all the fire in the house and then dress up in a horrible manner and parade in the streets. If anybody was believed to be possessed then as a warning to the spirits that person was burnt alive. A better explanation of why the Celts extinguished their fires is that this was done not to ward off the evil spirits but to rekindle it from the Druidic fire that was kept burning in the middle of Ireland.

So with all of that said, we can now take our history lesson to Easton PA. (peep the flyer).

But seriously, in my opinion there is a possible flaw in the idea that good music isn't still alive and breathing. Well, at least in Jersey it is. Though it seems clear (to the trained eye/ear) that our culture (or so it seems) is starting to trickle down into the bottom of the pits. Not knocking the south, or Chicken Noodle Soup (a song I like, I wont front) but where is the lyricism? I mean Jay Z (you know the multimillionaire) had to get out of his condo and produce/record a record because we gotta bring it back. (wow, the fau paux I've been trying to avoid).

Let me tell you why I'm stark-raving angry, and it takes a whole lot to get me upset. What happens when (I had plenty of time to do this): 1. NYC Tow Trucks were only moving away New Jersey & Pennsylvania plated vehicles? 2. We had to wait 4 hours in line only to be told, they are only letting 40 people in at a time, regardless if you had tickets or not. What was the point?. 3. The whole premise to pre-purchasing was not to wait in the line. (Bonus anger: If you were a "single lady" please feel to advance to the front). 4. Guest List? Oh no-Fuck you asshole, get in line. Then when you entered: No good sneakers to be found. Zero. 5. Hand Painted kicks (no disrespect, its an art show-I do get it) doesn't account for a rare nike from the manufacturer. What about the 2007-2008 shit that never hit the market? We were robbed big time. De La Dunk and Unkles on display? Come On Man, I mow the fucking lawn in De La Dunks!!. Of course, I don't know what I'm talking about because frustration has gotten the best of me. Lets keep it 100%-The shit was garbage. JB Classics? I'd rather wear Lugz. 5. The sound for the evening was down right terrible. Even Ghost Face (the only high light of the event) said "Sound Man, Please Turn My Mic Up, The Music Up, Something!!!". I don't make this up he then wen't on to say, "See I Told You". Translation: The Wu-Tang member was in utter digust and didn't want to do the show. Ask yourself, what did we really see? The only thing that worked (who actually did there job) were the moronic (but professional) security people and ladies collecting tens of thousands of dollars to see absolutely nothing. Peep the time of this blog, I'm heated. Do I have a right to be? Did anyone who attend this event feel the same way I do? What about the professional line cheaters (who were all caucasian white women this time, who were ready to run to the police if you blacked out).Understanding the relationship between true sneaker heads who actually came in to see "something" proved wrong. I will never go again, ever!!. I don't care if Jesus Christ himself was there. I always try to find good in everything I attend but this time, pure hatred and venom. Some of yall know I'm right. Lets hope they make this better. The turn out next year, wont be the same, guaranteed.

For those who are unaware (even though I'm broke half of the time) I have a sneaker fetish. Its not as bad as the regular cats, however; I do have a few (maybe like 3 or 4-for those counting) pair of kicks that I enjoy wearing. Oddly, I end up copping all of my SB's from Division East.

So when I was invited to spin (during the early time before the real dj's get on) I couldn't pass it up. I like spinning first because it sets the tone/mood of the night, and the heads like to come through, & check out the sounds. Court Tavern, New Brunswick-NJ. For the HipHop independent artist, a powerful support base is a major elite which (in my opinion) countervails yet curbs the power of the major record labels. The true underground artist in this case has used this tool as a means of handing out new material, paying bills which in fact reciprocates/gives back the love for the heads that put them there.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nabil of Underground Exp for creating the Tame One (top pic) , Pacewon (bottom pic), Reef The Lost Cause & Rotten Garden Record show together last night. What a dope night of HipHop Culture. I was sitting at home watching television with New Brunswick on my mind. I just grabbed my keys and bounced. I knew it was going to be something special and I was correct.

The mixture of "24xl" T-shirt wearing cats mingling with true underground heads all prove that its just music.

As many have realized (in my community), I don't go to shows anymore. My old school body is now obsessed with my new girlfriend:

The MPC 2000xl. This Time: I had no choice. I was compelled to see this line up, no matter the time; no matter the weather. Tame unfortunately had to cut his set short due to "suprise" artists & time restraints. Pacewon did major throwbacks like, "Step Up" & " I Declare War.

Its safe to say, that NJ HipHop Culture is alive and well. Pryme Profilik & Joe Frasier get better and better every time I see them perform and Prizm are local legends, too bad they don't realize it. Scenario: Lets just say for "arguments sake" that a caucasian colored HipHop martian were to come to earth, and check on the state of our music. The martian may play through 100,000 records before he found one that wasn't in common 4/4 time. The martian would then take those beats and enter every battle in the United States eventually landing in New Jersey.

Enter Captin Planit, (-pictured left-) the overall winner of the July 2006 "Live At The BBQ-Guard Your Grill" Beat Battle.

Considering the emancipation of New Jersey HipHop in other ways, Captin Planit is that sobering thought. Residing from MaryLand, originally he came in (a few months ago) with an air guitar , a Tom Cruise/Teen Wolf/Corey Hart routine and quickly took the L.

He returned, watched, understood & won.

HipHop is all about research.

In short: the outcome of his experiment worked and he left out with even more respect and adding to the advancement of HipHop Culture.

Overview: NJ Emergency HipHop Meeting.

The unthinkable just happened and I was there to witness it. To help you understand my vision and urgency that truth be told, I have a son. Overall: It was straight from day care to the meeting, it was just that serious.

Do not get it twisted, many people (including myself-but not looking for credit) have had a hand to a certain degree in helping keep New Jersey HipHop Alive (-Black 45-Pictured Left). But after "years and years" of town hall meetings and "open discussions" it gets a tad redundant, not this time. No hidden agendas, no subliminal political themes, no promoting your next event or myspace page, just real talk within the circle of people who have seen each for years but never said a word to each other. Thats about to change.

This meeting affected all of us (Artists, Activist, DJ's etc) who reside mainly in Essex County and soon to be abroad. All the people I consider "making moves" were there as I suspected.

For example, I remember surfing the net in 1998 and looking for a place to help artists from my area, not thinking that my website would actually be a template/movement to help promote myself and others yet somehow etched in the history books in regards to change. It never dawned on me to this day that I had a long term interest in HipHop Culture. As corny as this may seem, its my life, its what I do, and I will be that "old man" in the party dancing while the young girls cheer me on. Honestly, I've been listening to this music since its inception. I remember Twin City Roller Rink, Zanzibar, Club America, PipeLine, Sensations, Mrs. G's, and Sir Richards (to name a few-yes I took it there) . I remember when Orange Park used to have free concerts, when Weequahic Park wasn't a place to dump dead bodies, and yes believe it or not Moving Skates/Records. Don't sleep on me man, what are you stupid?

Its clear at times (because of my business mind & golden age era train of thought) some people love to hate me and for a wide variety of reasons. Reason number 1 is that I did this myself and that annoys people. "Going Broke" for NJ HipHop was never an option but it could happen. But; they can never say I didn't do anything for my community and should respect the comment that "Everyone Isn't Your Friend".

Even on a more interesting side, and who not only put this "Emergency Meeting" together was none other than Utility Record's own Mr. Anthony & Black 45. The vision was clear: No Gripe Section, just facts. Out of respect for the listening audience, I won't divulge the topics that took place, but just know if you were not there, don't even bother asking me and think twice about, "yo lets build". Chicanery is at an all time high, and I don't want any part of it.

Mr. Anthony who not only planted the idea stock definitely went up in regards togetherness. What I enjoyed mostly was the "respect & room to comment" on topics that have been permeating from quite some time.

Black 45 who I respect and admire and who has also worked with me on an early version of topics and even thought processes is now the leading the way (as far as Im concerned in open discussions) in the Essex County area. I encourage you brother to go further with the cause, teach and help HipHop Heads in our area that we need each other (without getting screwed over) and help everyone see the light of day.

It was truly a wonderful evening. Lets keep that intensity, and please respond if you attended.

It's safe to say that HipHop culture is "fickle". With that said, The Last HipHop Radio Show had a chance to enter Inflewential Recordings. It is an extraordinary moment in time when talented producers/artists are gifted enough in knowing their audience. Uniek (right) and Inflewence (left) pair up to create a diverse sound of music ranging from "Socially Conscious Struggle" all the way down to "Booty Bounce". A few hopefuls stand poised behind laptops and desktop computers. "There'll be no 'Laffy Taffy' tonight, baby, alright?" asserts Max Jerome of William Paterson University's Last Hip-Hop Radio Show (88.7 FM). He's right. Absent is the ubiquitous crunk and snap of radio. Instead, DJ Kaos mans the vinyl. The familiar sounds of Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Al Green, fodder for old school hip-hop samples, fill the space, where an audience mingles and waits.
Every last Sunday of the month, hip-hop heads make their way here, to Axiom Studios in Newark, to hear the sounds of the Meet the Producers (MTP) Beat Battle Invitational.
The victor from the last round, Scanz, a producer and MC from Englishtown, is the first to display a bit of prowess on the laptop before accepting an award for his slick production.
As the beat kicks in, the room is still. A layer of melancholic piano sample winds through the small crowd and heads respond, first a few, then all, bobbing to the beat, like the producer has set off a metronome in each pair of sneakers.
After a coin toss, organizer Black 45 announces the first match. With that, a competitor readies his computer and lets the audience take in his brand of beats. Tonight, as part of their sets, producers will each contribute a piece as a tribute to Marvin Gaye.
Without so much as one rhyme or an accompanying MC, the producers roll out their best, sometimes high on funk, other times down low and mellow, yet all the time plugged in and part of the lifeblood of the local hip-hop community.
Heads start nodding in the affirmative again, sometimes accompanied by the pained grin that settles on the face of someone who really digs it. Before long, Jerome starts a countdown: "eight ... seven ... six." He leans in with a swoop: "three ... two ..." and with a wave of his hands the music fades out.
Heartbeat of a scene Black 45, 34, of Newark, started organizing MTP last year along with Jerome but has been involved with beat battles for four years and with MC battles stretching back to 1995 in Montclair and Newark areas. He said while New York City battles might gauge winners solely by crowd response, MTP considers various technical and stylistic aspects of beatmaking.
"We look for how clean the tracks are, we want to know the drum patterns, originality," Black said. "We look for technique, how they put together the sound, is the sample sounding good? Does it fit? And most of all, creativity. If they're putting together some things we've never seen before, if it gets the crowd motivated."
The aim is not only to host an event in a live hip-hop culture often hindered by venues who fear violence (an unfounded fear, he said, with no shootings in all his years in the battle scene), but also to provide a standard-bearer for quality production, Black said.
"This is definitely a stepping stone for wherever you're going in your career," he said. "To come through here it's always like good resume work. People say, 'you know, Meet the Producers, I won that.' People say, 'well if you were involved with that, you've gotta be good or you've gotta be serious about your work.'"
Daryl Gibbs, music attorney and beat battle judge, who represents Prince Po (formerly of Organized Konfusion, the Queens hip-hop duo, with Pharoahe Monch), points to MTP as a forum for developing artists to network, whether MC or producer.
"I think about Organized Konfusion back in 1991 when they put one of their first albums out, a couple years before that they were going to these type of things, they were going to MC battles together, around the same time that Tribe (A Tribe Called Quest) and that whole movement started," Gibbs said. "What happens is, you build a network. You build a network of MCs if you're a producer, you build a network of producers if you're an MC. For instance, if an MC gets on, he says, 'I remember that beat, that beat is hot. Let me get this young producer, this young cat, I'm going to go get him because I know him, because he got the fire.' What you have is a swell of all these young cats that are in the underground out here, struggling. Once one of them makes it, they start to pull the other ones in."
As a result, the monthly war of beats is the antithesis of the typical definition of battle, planting the seed for fruitful collaboration, Gibbs said. "And that's the thing, it's about the networking, it's about the camaraderie."
A place for live hip-hopFor those out of the fray, the beat battle is a chance to experience local hip-hop in action, rather than through mixtapes or MySpace pages.
"They get to see the person behind the beats, not just the talent behind the beats," said graphic designer Kupi, 29, MTP organizer who hails from Paterson and works designing album art for hip-hop artists, her resume including ?uestlove (best known for as the drummer for The Roots) and Gnarls Barkley (Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse) projects.
"It's what's needed. Having this every month brings a lot of local artists out, a lot of people who can show their talent out, show how the music culture is still growing" said rapper Poet, 25, of Kearny, member of hip-hop group Written on Your Psyche. The group is on Delinquent Soundz Entertainment, home to 15 artists in the Jersey area. "A lot of people look at it like New Jersey is in the shadow of New York but there's a lot of talent out there. It's 2006. That whole New York , New Jersey, East Coast, West Coast - everybody just needs to take it back to just hip-hop, f**k all that other shit."
Sheena Ocot, 23, of Lodi, started working with MTP doing promotions and staffing the door after marketing for Delinquent Soundz group Vital Connection. "Locally, I believe the more you attend hip-hop in Jersey, you will meet the right people," she said. "Basically, you have to start low to get your name known."
On the fast track, undergroundWhen Scanz, the previous round's winner, accepts his award from MTP, he mentions a forthcoming album. Applause and verbal pats on the back follow.
Black 45 pauses the competition to recognize a famous face in the audience: Lady Luck, a Newark rapper originally from Teaneck, known for her battle with Terror Squad's Remy Martin. After he's eliminated from the competition, Luck hugs producer Cassius Clay, one of her collaborators. Formerly signed to Def Jam, Luck now operates on her Fort Lee-based Major Hustle Records.
"At times, it's about having the people come down that are in the industry already," Gibbs said. "They come down, they witness the movement and they cherry-pick the best flavors that are out there."
Before producer Silent Someone wins the judges over with his chilled-out stylings to triumph in the battle of beats, The A-Alikes of Brooklyn, members of the Revolutionary But Gangsta movement (home to alt hip-hop stalwarts dead prez) perform a set as a sort of lyrical half-time.
Big Kas, vice president of A-Alikes' label Nervous Records (former home to Black Moon and 90s house) said the group just came off supporting Ghostface Killah's "Fishscale" tour in front of thousands. In Newark, the MCs throw their energy on a crowd of less than 50, in anticipation of their forthcoming album, "I Eat, You Eat." For signed artists, the appeal of an intimate setting like the beat battle is much the same of a producer trying to get heard: connection.
"It's just about getting it to the people," Kas said. He said he makes sure to attend the events three to four times a year, returning with signed talent like the A-Alikes. "It can inspire them to keep doing what they do," he said of the underground producers. "It's always been that way and that's why I support it, just from a pure, b-boy hip-hop stand."
Former battle participants have received attention on MTV and BET institution "106 & Park."
"The biggest one of all, Just Blaze," said Black 45, noting that the Blaze, from Paterson, has gone on to collaborate with artists including Jay-Z, but used to DJ in the local Newark scene. "He is the number one producer. It's great to see someone like that shouting your name out," he said.
It's why Gibbs can say with conviction: "You'll be hearing about these guys in five years."

The success of the MTP New Jersey Beat Battle Invitational is now more evident. It's going on a year and a half, and its stronger than ever. The failure of any show is lack of consistency. For this months title, the "Lets Get It On" theme was a tribute to Soul Legend Marvin Gaye and the producers came with in complete heat, so congrats to them. From a neutral perspective all eyes were on Aprils Winner "Silent Someone". (pictured -right-). Best of luck to him in the future.

Converse All Star: Sneaker Exhibition-NYC

It has literally reached a point where its seems like we all live in the south. Yeah I Said It. However; the sneaker culture is Universal and Big Business. I had an opportunity to check out the Converse Sneaker Exhibition and it was interesting. I have to give ultimate props for the public relations people because it was actually more than I expected.

Seeing And Understanding: The BoomSkwad.

For the average hiphop head an evening with the Boom Skwad is a rather uncommon experience. In case you are unaware they have been repping Jersey for almost a decade with Tame-One, and they are (to me) legends in the Bricks. For example, when cats were sitting at home "asking about the next show" in the early 90's they were there either on stage rocking or networking. I will never forget those days. The first time I ever witnessed an MPC60 was at Rhinos Crib. Without question as humble as they seem to be, they are truly Underground Ghetto Superstars!!

Last HipHop Radio Show Translation: "Get behind them or get behind them". Thats right party people, the annual BoomSkwad Radio Take Over was in full effect last night with the "OG's coming through and the Next Generation (Devastation) showed love. -picture l to r- (Mellow Max 165, DJ Porno, and Rhino CMZ).

If you didn't know by now, New Jersey is mad competitive. Apparently this has something to do with our eagerness to become successful. With that said enter March MTP Beat Battle Winner Scanz. For example, dude was quiet for the whole night, just hoping no one Id'ed him. He let his beats do all the talking. For those who attended the battle (which easily ran circles around the previous month, still cant call it) a lot of producers came in with fire and it was all about the luck of the draw. Stand Out Performances were: The Rotten Garden Records Crew, Tame-One, Lord Jamar, Zesto, Cyper Complete (compliments of Black 45) all made up for a good show/album release party.

March Madness 2006: From DC To NYC.

What happens when gas prices reach an all time high and you have a below income job? Take a road trip of course. Just relax your minds, briefly celebrate my weekend of march madness. After a long night of sleeping, a half a tank of gas; I finally made it to Washington DC to judge the highly slept on Beat Grinders III Battle. Ok, I'm thinking this can't be as tough as our situation here in Jersey. Think again. Shouts to Slim Kat 78 for winning overall & captivating the crowd. They have a laid back sound over there, similar to a "Jazzanova" Groove. I will admint there is always an effort to meet as many people as I can and network however its safe to say that DC sounds like a move to be ventured in the future Enoch The 7th Prophet -center- . After that situation I headed to NYC to DJ the HipHop Greets Poetry III with none other than Andreas Thai-Yan. This event was extremely special to me because the Art Of Urban Crew knows how to put on a show, and Im happy I was part of it. That might of been my last one, but my prescence will be there in the audience. Stand Out Performance: Everyone. No For Real.

For All The Pioneers: I'm Going Way Back.

Real Talk. The early 1990's HipHop Scene was a heady time for the Culture. For the tri-state area especially (NYC-NJ) its safe to say that about 10 groups were in full operation on the radio and tv screens, yet setting trends not following. This era was actually a time when (believe it or not) making music was first option and recording artists somewhat believed in their contracts. Times have changed. The paper is different (Ringtones, Sitcoms, Movie Deal, Car Campaigns etc) Our culture is slowly being taken away from us by the majors and failure is not an option for 2006 and beyond.
HipHop Culture (on a whole) now is so successful (yet disposable) that we tend to forget about the 3rd generation golden age legends and cats like this were the bonified leaders and never the "hand out-put them on because our main rapper is making money". They earned it.

Who is going to bring the east back?

Red Alert summed up the whole evening at the Connex Networking Party at the Remote Lounge-NYC. He stated that "You have to stay on your grind and don't let nobody put you on, it has to be earned-because that quick fix can bite you in the ass".

Transition: Last night I had a chance to check out the original "Kanye West" fashion king Dres of the Black Sheep and my greatest of all time (judging by me hopping in the crowd-which is rare) Just-Ice (he rocked Latoya, Going Way Back, and Cold Getting Dumb). Dres (pictured -left- with Red Alert -right-) also performed some really good new solid material and yes the hits. Having these two cats on the bill on the same night? There was absolutely no way I was missing this show and I never attend these type of events.
I wonder who has the record for the most business cards. I have about 40.

The Urban Scribes: Its Plural Not Singular.

History Lesson 101. In the fall of 2003 I went to the African Globe Studios In Newark NJ because I was invited by Mr. Andreas Thai-Yan (who never actually showed up) to check out an open mic show. I'm sitting there completely bored out of my mind when the tallest emcee in the world steps out. His name was HeadKaze. (pictured right). Tagon (Left) came out soon after. Confession.

It wasn't them that I liked at the time it was the damn beats. The sounds rang in my head for the entire show. During further investigation, there was a producer by the name of MentPlus* who mashed out that sound. Incredible and by chance we are all friends to this day.

With that said, The Urban Scribes are still alive and breathing. Many members have come and gone but one thing is for sure they are still trying to make it happen. They came up to the "Last HipHop Radio Show" with new material, and recollect on Past, Present, & Future.

Xing And Fox Are In The House: Literally.

Without doubt, the greatest disappointment to Jersey HipHop is never having the ability to help elevate the culture. Don't get me wrong, our sound rings bells all within the industry however; when its time to take it to the next level, someone needs to fill that void.

Enter Xing (Left) & Fox (Right). I definitely want to thank Mr. Tame One for allowing me to build with these cats. They are truly on some next ish.

With that said, Since a chance meeting at a recording studio in the summer of 98, XING N FOX have been working non-stop on creating a sound for what they hope will be a new era in hip hop. Mutually disenchanted with the post Biggie/Pac game, the duo started making tracks with big breaks and deep bass-lines, two key ingredients they felt were vanishing from both mainstream and underground hip hop. From there they began combining elements of drum and bass, house, disco, funk, reggae and old school rap, working hard at making the music fresh and innovative, while retaining the basic elements. Throughout this period, the New Jersey based duo have remained virtually unknown, never compromising their workand never succumbing to the bullshit of the industry. It wasn't until recently that the notoriously private lads decided to go public with XING N FOX.COM, a launching pad for their new work, which most notably includes an album from the legendary Tame One (formerly of The Artifacts). Look for upcoming news about the "Spazmatic" LP by Tame and other future XING N FOX productions, along with audio snippets of new joints to be posted exclusively at XING N FOX.COM. Mixtapes of rare grooves and jams from back in the day will also be available in the near future as well as info and wax from their imprint Ahead Recordings.

The Last HipHop Radio Show: El Da Sensei.

Don't kick yourself in the butt so soon, because the show you were listening to finally manifested (after 4 years of waiting). So before you let the "one sheet" do all the information, let it be known that by far this was the best guest of 2006. It was worth the wait.

Newark, New Jersey was dubbed “New Jerusalem” for the unique Hip Hop sounds pioneered by the likes of Queen Latifah, Redman, Naughty By Nature, Lords Of The Underground and The Artifacts. El Da Sensei entered the scene as one half of The Artifacts with his partner Tame One in 1994 when their debut album, Between A Rock And A Hard Place, brought them worldwide attention. After over a decade of creating essential Hip Hop music for his loyal fans, El Da Sensei is preparing to release his sophomore solo album, The Unusual, on Fat Beats Records in February 2006. As a graffiti artist, B-boy, beat boxer, and lyricist, El Da Sensei channeled his diverse talents through his music. In his teens he battled as a dancer, and later began entering emcee battles. He partnered with Tame One to form the group That’s Them, but later changed the group moniker to The Artifacts. In an era when Hip Hop was a mosh pit of over-the-top styles and flavors, The Artifacts offered fans the most organic presentation of beats and rhymes that true-school fans could ask for. Their debut album produced the memorable songs “Wrong Side of the Tracks”, “Dynamite Soul” and “C’mon Wit Da Get Down”, setting the stage for the ‘Best Of The Underground’ Tour. The Artifacts hit the road with a then relatively unknown rapper from Chicago, Common Sense, along with Organized Konfusion and The Beatnuts. Not long after, The Artifacts returned home to drop their second album That’s Them, which included headphone masterpieces like “Art of Facts”, “The Interview” and “The Ultimate”. Soon after the second release, El Da Sensei and Tame One decided upon an amicable break up. Ode To The Educated Audience: Rocky Presents The IPA-Beat Battle (NYC).

The decision to finally write something on the IPA-Beat Battle (NYC) is a really a no-brainer. What place in NYC can you find a constant run of fair and (sometimes) balanced decision making when it comes to unknown producers. Have you ever been to one? Your stomach sometimes turns when you see the person who was supposed to win get bumped first round then root for the person who beat the man, next to the man. Man Versus Man. But I digress, when I first went to the battle in early 2004, I was very upset because the people I had in it didnt come out victorious. It was a learning lesson it made that cat 4 times stronger. However; that immediately goes back to the aforementioned title of this blog. If you know that the decision making process is based on the audience, why would you only bring two people? Creating and running a show on a consistent basis (especially on a Sunday) is not an easy task. Just ask NYC Legend Rocky.

Besides I wanted to start my week off with some true hiphop. The line up was nice: Ill Tarzan, Substantial, Black Friday, Phoenix Rizin, Rated "R", Hasan Insane, (to name a few) but Bad Sport came out the victor.

So Shouts to you Rocky and Mr. Sport (aka "Where The #$%& You At) keep doing what you do.

MTP-Its Open Season For: Evolution Beats.

It's safe to say that the independence/impartiality has never been more applicable to the new season of the MTP Beat Battle Invitational. For example, every single producer came in with a fresh new sound including a few bells and whistle performers. I think I may have noticed a producer come in with a Playstation dropping beats and also someone that did a Tom Cruise "Risky Business" routine. Being from New Jersey, I have to get used to that. Were real laid back over here.

Sometimes, I just wish I could literally "close my eyes" (to evade the side show) when some of these selected producers get on to do their thing but that helps their chances of winning, so you can't hate on that.

Question: Were there any valuable lessons learned from this?

Answer: Never sleep on your opponent.

However, "Open Season" (amid a mediocre turn out) was well worth its weight in gold/platinum. We got a chance to hear and see the likes of P.O.W, Captain Planit, Exel, GameFace (who strikes a shocking resemblance to Tupac Shakur) just to name a few. Stand outs performances were Enoch The 7th Prophet, Pumpkinhead, and the Legendary Cy Marshall Law. For those that remember Cy Marshall he has graced Basically-HipHop.Com at countless venues including: The Knitting Factory, The Javalanz Cafe (DVD Cover), The Apocalypse Lounge, African Globe Studios, The Last HipHop Radio Show, & His stomping grounds the Court Tavern.

His stage performances are incredible. Unfortunately, sound problems plagued him during his entire set forced him to do an acapella performance at times. But thats HipHop. These selected performers stayed professional and I wish them best of luck in the future.

Frequently, (yet usually systematically) karma sets in for those people/robots who refuse to believe that true hiphop exists in the tri-state and are subjected to listening to the Laffy Taffy.

The art of spinning vinyl records is such a well-established overlooked feature in any venue it will in my opinion determine the outcome of a good and bad time.

Yet whether praised or blamed for the outcome, the underground hiphop scene (or lack there of) in New Jersey is a needed importance desperately evaiding the horried reggaeton and dirty south era.

I'm hoping that this picture will speak volumes.

Its All Eyes On She: Meet VenoMiss.

It is unlikely that, a shortage of New Jersey female rappers exist; the question is where are they?

Meet Venomiss. The "Hood Made Me" she stated. Based on my own observation her sense of humor & rhyme style is very unique, and she definitely knows how to steal the spotlight. Her demeanor is calm yet focused and takes the culture very seriously.

Her background is " Growing up, she was famous around the neighborhood for stealing the spotlight, singing, making people laugh, and being very receptive to having all eyes on her. In fact, by age two, it was obvious that she preferred music as her means to the spotlight. She would spend hours playing with her grandparents piano, testing each key and remembering the sound it made and often making up songs to go along. Her father was a DJ and often took her into his basement DJ station when he practiced. She quickly developed a repertoire of favorite records, and by age 4 was even experimenting with using the turntables".

Her freestyle skills needed "a little work" but no one is perfect.

Look out for her and bevy of mixtapes coming to a hood near you.

No one gets to see (yet only hear) this part of the promotion game. However, when it comes to HipHop Culture in New Jersey theres an old saying that "you cannot wait for it to knock on your door, you have to kick it in". Enter Jon Judah (r) & DJ Fusion (l).

Question for the masses, what do you get when you have all music genres mixed into one cohesive sound? Answer: The Fuse Box.

Quite possibly one of the longest running shows on WRSU, its safe to say that these veterans of the game are on point. I had an opportunity (yet again) for this duo to allow me to hit up the airwaves to talk, listen, & be treated like a star well at least for day.

Radio Hosts take heed they are the ones really making the real moves, so never sleep on the "OG's".

Just Planet: It's MayDay On The Front Line.

The tradition of New Jersey HipHop reciprocation still lives on. Enter Just Planet* (DJ Priority Pictured Left). Remember her?

This woman of her word looks out for the up-and-coming guys like us and showed loved to a crew going by the name of "The FrontLine". Its ironic that Just actually came to the Last HipHop Radio Show and also got a well deserved break from doing her own thing as Radio Host/HipHop Music Director on 90.3 WMSC and to coin the phrase "holding it down" with her, "ah hah".

You gotta see her work, shes "everywhere at once" but still knows where everything is and aware of her surroundings. I'm just happy taking pics and learning more about the culture in Jersey. Judging by her demeanor this outspoken powerhouse is very professional and understands the business.

You need that in your life.

Justine Mary, aka JuST, aka J. Mary was born and raised in Passaic County, NJ. This young lady is an extremely diverse artist who incorporates rapping, singing, and spoken word into her music, making her a very universal and eclectic artist. JuST began at a young age writing poetry, having a poem published in a national poetry book as early as 1996. She began to use her prose and God-given musical talent as a channel to express her feelings, experiences, and artistic brilliance.

She plans to visit our show again in the future.

In The Rotten Garden: HipHop Still Blooms.

Lets face it, we are in a time when our music in the mainstream has reached an all-time low. Its rather convienient to hate on the "dirty south" because that seems to be the growing trend and every area (East, West, Mid-West) had their chance to shine, but you really can't be serious anymore in 2006. The Zulu Nation is even trying to hold hiphop meetings a literal first in this culture. The record industry has found a new "boy" and its going to get worse.

We now have to listen to sample free beats, full songs about "candy coated paint/platinum grills combined with child-like lyrics.

Basically, there are no more outlets for true hiphop heads to grow as far as I'm concerned.

Someone needs to plant some seeds.

Rugged & Raw Wins 2005 MTP Beat Battle.

In the wonderful world of New Jersey HipHop Culture, we are often reminded how important it is to really understand. Yet, that "understanding" would be incomplete if I don't quickly explain why that gentleman is wearing a bright red cape in the winter time. Well you guessed it, leave it up to 2005 NJ MTP Grand Champion "Rugged-N-Raw" (pictured right) to win in a "unamimous decision". The show was put together by yours truly in association with Black 45 & DJ Priority.

The show started off with the "best of the best" cipher complete including (to name a few) El Da Sensei, Hasan Salaam, Tame-One, Kool Mellow Max, & Purple Haze and ended with the entire Smacks Records Team (Mr. Len, Kice Of Course, Mental Kase, & The enigmatic Bully Mouth). The BeatBattle contestants did their thing but Rugged was better. Stage Props, The doubling and trippling of beats, and great sound made his performance rise above the competition in comparison. Not only did he bring heat, he came in with prescence. Congrats to him and his 5th Column Crew.

If you attended the show, all feedback is appreciated. 2006 you guys aren't ready for.

At the end of the day, no one (in my opinion) can ever say that The Last HipHop Radio Show doesn't put in work when it comes to New Jersey HipHop Culture (peep the clock).

With that said on a side note(because this a blog) I actually have two current confessions beginning with: 1. I own 3 pair of open toe sandals (sorry Cam I sinned) 2. I fell flat on my face (Priority is chuckling to himself right now) walking up a flight of stairs with absolutely no chance on winning any cracking sessions in the future.

But I digress, lets get right into it.

To begin, The "Mighty-Mighty" DJ Emskee Of The Legendary UnderGround RailRoad manhandled the 1's and 2's with Gems and Treats. His selection was new material (The Good People) and precirca 88-98. Its agreed (judging by his demeanor) he had a wonderful time. As he says, "Just Checking Out The Scene".

Did we speak about the Ladies? Oh Yes my faithful listeners, we had the talents of "femcees and rappers" touching the mic (and didnt want to leave by the way) beginning with the "off the cuff" phone tap with Elsie Law who explained why she decided to get into the game, then a solid interview with Purple Haze, and also an Out Of This World freestyle by up and coming artist Just Planet.

Overall the night/day really went well, and whom ever listened to the show can speak now or forever hold your peace.

I had a wonderful opportunity this weekend to hit 95 south and end up spinning (along with DJ Priority & MentPlus*) at the "5 Spot" located in the City of Philadelphia.

The show consisted of Enoch The 7th Prophet, The Illvibe Collective, Capital X, and Yes the Dirty Rotten Scoundrel: Jeru Da Damaja (pictured left).

A lot of true HipHop Heads can agree that they have listened to Jerus Album ten times over.
The only setback we encountered (Did I mention there was a snow storm) was on the way back.

Andreas Thai-Yan counted 14 Car Accidents. It was that serious. Mad obstacles were faced on the way back but thats the life of a True HipHop Head.

What can I say but Happy New Year.

We begin our 2006 by reintroducing a familiar voice with none other than RP Gezus (pictured -left-).

Not only is he an alumnus of the Last HipHop Radio Show, but he has currently branched out (well sorta-its still a way of life) with his own imprint entitled, "Dig Dug Music".

His sound, (well its no secret) is true to the art form with touches of pre nineties notions with some of todays top lyricists in the local NJ Game. Does he has beef within the industry? Kinda but not really. Lets begin with the official bombshell but still letting "by gone be by gones" with the hood classic, "Barbershop Uncut".

Remember the opening and ending title track? Yep thats his. Did he get any kind of credit?

Nope. Its all a learning process for him (being humble doesn't pay at times) and he recommends everyone stays on their grind because at the end of the day will have to keep getting it until our time comes.

Did anyone listen to the show on Christmas Eve? Well, I sure did I was there. Funny story. You ever have that one person who tells you that they can flow? Well, this time I was sort of prepared. Everyone said that he could but I didn't believe them.

Even DJ Priority was peering through the other studio.

Then again, Am I a glutton for punishment?

Well Happy Holidays fool, because Chris James (center) definitely didnt crack under the pressure of dropping his music to the masses.

Although he only played a few tracks, what he did was do them "live over the air" without any mistakes or "wait hold up" anything. Most of his tracks were about relationships, broken homes and real everyday issues, pretty much things everyone can relate too.

Life he feels begins for him in 2006. Lets wish him the best of luck.

DJ Diabl0 (pictured left) had a wonderful scratch session with DJ Sever, and Resident DJ Priority playing goodies and treats circa 1988-1995.

Along with the tracks, some of the topics permeated actually starting from "scratch" left to the misconception of HipHop Heads not loving other forms of music.

We share a brief past history including a few vibe sessions, building, and the legendary Turntablism 101 show that was in Newark NJ.

"New Jersey is building and not burning". I write this blog with pride because I really didnt know what to expect. There is nothing like people/artist who believe in each other and always on the grind.

Later for the naysayers and critics this group/collective has wonderful potential.

Oddly, they have to figure out exactly what it is.

Last night there was a first time for everything and let me tell you not only did Spook (-center-), Johnny Young (left) and JumpOff 69 (right) bring some radio friendly tracks ( For example "Money, The Anthem" To Name A Few) they brought in Live Instrumentation and you heard it correctly "freestyled" ala HipHop Band Style.

Although their style isn't that quite polished you can expect to hear and also see more of The Fallout Prudckshunz Crew.

Coffee Drinkers unite and lets chop it up about HipHop Culture. In fact, lets mix it in with True Underground and BreakBeats.

No your ears were not decieving you, those strange voices are confirmed (from l to r: Andreas Thai-Yan, Max-Jerome, & C-Reality) I just hope you had a chance to listen, and strike the balance.

The affectionately titled "Takeover II" aka The New Real Hip Hop -- Alternative Radio Station WBAI let us utilize the airwaves every year for a morning show concept that helps take our culture (at least for a day) to that over used quote, "The Next Level".

I mean the honestly whats the point of airtime if you don't use it correctly.

With the event watering down of today’s urban radio stations, HipHop heads like ourselves do not have the opportunity to express our opinions of what they would like to listen to.

I'm just looking forward to next year.

The event started on a Friday November 18th at 7pm lasted 29 hours.

Real talk interviews with Hip Hop pioneers such as Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, and Nikki D to today’s star producers and artist like D Dot and Guerrilla Black, & Kanye West.

One artist comes to mind immediately when I think about C Reality (pictured center).

In the immortal words of Mr. Lif, "I Dare You To-Front On This".

Its safe to say that C-Reality is the Epitome of a HipHop Purist. I'm not saying this in jest, the man knows his music, and we clicked instantly.

For those who don't know this man, you are going to find out real quick. Formerly of the MyndCrukz (signed with Arista) don't come wack with the HipHop Knowledge (and Blends, hehe) or he will tell you that you are wrong.

I was wrong for the whole night.

But he's right.

The art of the DJ is dying, his set didnt go past 1995 (for those checking) and he is an official member of The Last HipHop Radio Show.

WBAI-NYC: HipHop TakeOver-Part II.

On the evening of November 18th 2005, the countdown began for WBAI's Annual HipHop Take-Over Part II.

The NYC & Jersey connection was definitely in the house.

The first segment entitled "Pioneering Women In HipHop" was christened by none other than the ever so colorful "Money Love" (pictured second from left) & Ife, NJ's Best Kept Secret aka "They Keep Calling Me" DJ Priority. (pictured left).

Shouts to Ife & C for letting us represent this time around.

Although, this event was commissioned almost a year ago, personally' it felt like only yesterday when I used to buy "dollar 3 pack tapes" and wouldn't go to bed until DJ Red Alert was over making him a perfect candidate to hold it down with HipHop Knowledge.

When we were watching video music box, Red more than likely was in the video.

This was my first opportunity to meet one of my all time idols face to face. I felt like Malcolm X meeting Elijah Muhammad.

But I digress, semi-old school heads like myself still have a little bit left in us.

If last nights show was a testiment, deathwish, or better yet; converted into a boxing ring Karnevil Kid (-pictured left-) would of won by a 12th round knock out. The kid has talent, potential and obviously is as tough as nails.

The plot started off real basic: 1. Introduced himself to the audience. 2. Played a few tracks, over the air. 3. Opened the phone lines up to get suggestions. 4. All hell broke loose.

Bizarre is a better way of putting it on The Last HipHop Radio Show.

Since he was fighting off the callers, I guess we can tell you now who he is currently. The kid began his official music career as a hype man for and emcee named S.O.S. aka Analyze under indie label I.G.W.T (Capital X) Entertainment.

Shortly after he began performing as a solo act all over the tri-state. He has been on the same bill as Immortal Technique, Q-Unique (Arsonists), Ill Bill, Sabac Red, Hyde, Akir, Eternia, Jeru the Damaja, and more.

He just recently joined forces with and R&B/Rap artist name Damien and together are creating some of the hottest tracks in the industry.

Karnevil Kid also recently teamed up with Tommy Gunnz and Abakus to begin a new venture name EMPIRE. EMPIRE is anticipated to be one of the biggest projects to ever grace the hip hop scene.

Note: Even this post was in high demand via email, and I'm keeping my word to the kid and also the listeners who had a whole lot to say. The floor is open.

Let's Define the word Entrepreneur.

Easier - An entrepreneur, pronounced 'on-truh-pruh-nur', is someone who starts a business and is good at finding ways to make money.

Harder - Entrepreneurs are people who organize, operate, and assume the risks for starting up a business venture.

With that said, some see the glass as half full, others may see it as half empty, however; Zone ProRecording Artist Slumz (-pictured right-) is looking on how to sell it after the equation is solved.

A "Hustlers Spirit" is the only way to describe this emcee and also his flow. He is no stranger to the game, and that particular evening promoted almost everything under the sun including a company venture (not a label) under the moniker Entourage. Look for an EP early 2006.

Speaking of Entourage, Slumz came to the Last HipHop Radio Show with fellow business owner and former MegaTech Recording Artist Jukstapose (-pictured left-) ( P ) Pronunciation Key (jkst-pz) tr.v. jux·ta·posed, jux·ta·pos·ing, jux·ta·pos·es To place side by side, especially for comparison or contrast.

He is also no stranger to promotion in his own right. To date, Jukstapose has released 3 of his own mixtapes and is currently working on a solo album. He has worked with groups such as "Projekt Zero and the producer "Bean One", and his own group "R.E.A.L.", which was started in 1997 and still includes originally members Dilligaf, Seb Nasty.

The revolution will not be televised, it shall be blogged.

In the wake of the shocking after-math of Hurricane Katrina, I had a chance to check out New Jersey HipHop Promoter Lady Jayde (-pictured right-) decided to throw a benefit concert.

Was there a message in the music, well; you are going to ask the people who performed that evening.

Basically, the show was a success and everyone who was there knows it. No artists did "their whole album" or try to sell cds to people looking to support a cause, it was just Good Music.

The opening DJ was outstanding (who ever he was) and Turntablist Crew "FreeHand" rocked the spot with Gems until the show started.

LIFE LONG the shows MC for the evening ripped it.

Every single artist was stellar (with your occasional bump in the sound or cd skip), but the highlight of the evening for me was Venemous & Phonetic of www.delinquentsoundz.com they seemed to have felt "right at home" and it showed. Other diddy exclusives took place like the suprise performance from Masai Bey entire team.

MTP Beat Battle Thriller Night: Analyze This.

Trick Or Treat, and it's literally the day after.

From no where is the only way I can see it, which would explain why the show was entitled "Thriller Night".

Hell truly froze over, and its not even winter yet.

Bottom Line: The show went really well, and anything can happen and it did.

This guy destroyed all competition. His name is Analogic (picture left).

Continuous Beat after Beat after Beat. Congratulations to him and his future endeavors.

Analogic born and raised in trenton NJ.... "I learned I had an ear for music at a young age, grew up listenin to early rock n roll, and grunge. not til I was around the age of 11 or 12 did I learn about hip hop, and been a fan ever since. I started writing songs and rhyming when i was about 19 but always wanted to learn how to make music (beats).

"So i started messin around with some computer programs like acid pro and project 5 etc.... just to get a feel for the art of beatmaking in early "03". But for some reason i wasn't feelin the whole virtual beat machine movement, So i bought an mpc 2000 xl off of one of my friends and i was on my way, that was in summer "03" . I didnt leave my house for hardly anything until i conquered this machine, I didnt know anyone who had one and could help me learn so it was up to me".

Eventually i got it down and have been growing as a producer with every beat i make. Its only been close to 2 years I've been doin this and already Im startin my career, thanks to the help of my friends East, Dj k.o., Nabil, Drew Ali and everyone else that supports me" .

Omar an Alumni of So Cal University came to the Last HipHop Radio Show and promoted his newest material and as he predicted received nothing but well wishes from the callers about his production talents, artists and understanding his movement about uplifting and sometimes an occasional party track.

When the roving eye of the music industry spots hip-hop scenes thriving in places far away from here - like St. Louis, Atlanta and Houston - many can only wonder when New Jersey will get its chance to shine.
Of course, to be there in that spotlight, the state needs a scene to sell to the outside world.

So some might rephrase the question and ask, When will the state's countless MCs, DJs and promoters get their act together and form a scene to call their own?
That's the type of question that Jerome Ford, a tall, tattooed, boisterous and gaunt man from West Orange, and his closest friends pose when his voice hits the airwaves late on Friday nights.
For six years, Ford, 35, has hosted "The Last Hip-Hop Radio Show" under the nom du radio Max Jerome. (No relation to the '80s sci-fi icon Max Headroom.) From midnight to 3 a.m. on Friday nights - actually, Saturday mornings - the show blasts from the studios of WPSC 88.7, the independent radio station based on the campus of William Paterson University.
"I hope y'all are into underground rap because you're gonna get a full dose of it," Ford said last Friday into a microphone perched in the slightly dusty broadcast booth. He then slapped down records by esoteric artists, including Conspicuous the Coroner and Sir Smurf Little.
Joining him on the show are two close friends: DJ Priority, aka Faheem Jackson, 27, of Paterson; and Andreas Thai-yan Jackson, 33, of Montclair, who are not related. Together, the three want to remind people that hip-hop is also about art, not just attitude and a way to sell Sprite.
Ford, Priority and Jackson share a desire to shun the world of commercial hip-hop, which is ruled by marketing, money and politics, and explore the multifaceted world of underground hip-hop, where independent and unsigned rappers develop their chops without the pressure to sell a million albums. The belief is that hip-hop is strongest when it is a pure, creative process.
What gets played on "The Last Hip-Hop Show" is whatever records Ford and Priority pack in their milk crates that night. This includes tastemakers from the old school (like Gang Starr) and from the new (like Little Brother and Common), as well as from the bizarre (like Kosha Dillz, an MC on Matzah 4 Yo' Mouf Records).
"If it's bona fide, we play it," Ford said as he got set to spin a record by D-Block, a gangsta rap group from Yonkers, N.Y.
The dynamic between the men can be described as such: Ford is the bluster, Priority the skill and Jackson the articulate quizmaster ("This guy knows what rappers have for breakfast," Ford is fond of saying about him).
Here and there, light-hearted conversation breaks up the music.
"I don't really give a damn about Grandmaster Flash," Ford snapped into the microphone, a verbal slap at one of hip-hop's founding fathers.
"Ooooh," replied a chorus of disapproval.
The chorus rose from the others who hung out in the studio last weekend. In addition to Jackson, there was DJ Macky, who hosts a hip-hop show broadcast on Wednesday nights and is known to his parents as Michael Soliman, 22, of West Orange. There was also R.T., the building's custodian, who once studied sociology at William Paterson, co-wrote a book of poetry, and is now known to the U.S. Army Reserves as quartermaster Richard Anthony Turner, 36, of East Orange.
"He's one of the better DJs, in terms of demeanor. Humble," Turner said of Ford. "He breathes this stuff. It's his life."
Moments before, Ford said in a burst, "I trained everyone at this radio station!" The shirt he wore had a picture of Tupac Shakur, the late, bald and tattooed rapper, underlined by the title of his most popular album, "All Eyez on Me."
The once-mighty West Coast hip-hop scene largely spiraled downhill after Shakur was gunned down in 1996. But it is surprising that the Garden State has not been a more bountiful place for hip-hop, especially considering its history.
Newark spawned such stars as Queen Latifah, Redman, Naughty by Nature and Rah Digga. The Oranges produced Lauryn Hill and the Fugees. The producer Just Blaze, who frequently works with Jay-Z, came up in Paterson. And, of course, the Sugarhill Gang formed in Englewood and went on to release "Rapper's Delight," the first hip-hop record to go commercial.
"The history here is so rich," Jackson said. Problem is, the present isn't.
Like a shrub that grows in a closet, Jersey's scene exists in the shadow of two towering pillars of hip-hop: New York and Philadelphia. As a result, the state's hip-hop scene lacks "infrastructure," Jackson said.
"Jersey, honestly, is weird, promotion-wise," Jackson said. "It's a tough sell. There's not a lot of solidarity."
In other words, Jersey hip-hop lacks a community. There may be a pool of talented DJs, MCs and promoters, but there is a deficit of identity and hometown pride. Big events do happen, such as the biannual hip-hop festival at NJPAC and a rap-tinged political convention, which visited Newark during last summer's presidential campaign. But there aren't the concerts, competitions and clubs that draw the masses together into a productive, creative stew.
So, in a way, by playing non-commercial hip-hop - especially Jersey acts like Hasan Salaam and Kice of Course - "The Last Hip-Hop Radio Show" might help spark a bit of community building. The three men plan on bigger projects, such as podcasts and a documentary on Jersey hip-hop history. And, of course, there is the dream of jumping to satellite radio, the emerging format for global, alternative radio.
Until then, they will have to content themselves spinning records at this 260-watt radio station.
It is not exactly clear who is listening. The phone lines light up only a handful of times during the night. "We put them live on the air and we make them rap," Jackson said. "And they're really bad. Wait. Don't write that."
"Shout out to the Passaic County jail," Ford said into the microphone around 2:30 a.m. Apparently, convicts like to call collect and battle rap one another via phone, which is then broadcast live.
"Prison dudes, they go at each other," Turner said.
None called that night, however.
And the beat went on and the night dragged into the yawning hours of morning.
Inside the broadcast booth, Priority kept the soundtrack bumping from one record to the next, seeming content to be alone with his handicraft.
Outside the booth, Ford filled out a radio logbook in between Newport cigarettes. Soliman gnawed on his water bottle cap. A clear blue trash bag sat semi-full by the studio door, waiting to be pitched. Jackson and Turner debated the politics that rule broadcast media, like how ownership affects content and how regulation may eventually clamp down on the Internet and satellite radio. "It's about passing bills and legislation," Jackson said, popping another organic, whole-wheat cracker into his mouth.
The ever-evolving beat saturated the chill October air around them. For a few minutes that felt like hours, the studio was transformed. It felt like a lounge where people could have smart conversation or just while away the early morn. One could imagine how a dozen, a hundred, perhaps a thousand moments like these might be playing out across North Jersey, in passing cars and in the homes of young men and women where the radio is tuned in.
And maybe in one of the small spaces, somebody might be telling a friend, "We should do something, too. We should be making music ourselves."

There is one indisputable fact in the world of New Jersey HipHop Culture, you are as only good as the people you work with with.

With that said, Enter Andreas Thai-Yan.

That name might sound familiar because yes; he too is a past Alumni of the Last HipHop Radio Show. His work schedule forced him to reorganize to take it to the next level.

Andreas (pictured left) came up as a guest and filled us in on his newest ventures (besides managing me) including the most informative website on the planet www.artofurban.com.

Aside from him being a respected Poet, Recording Artist, & Promoter, he also is a Journalist who has written stories on everyone in the culture from A to Z. Lets also not forget (in case he looks familiar) he was the brainchild of the National HipHop Political Convention that went down about a year ago where Jerseys Own Priority (pictured right) was the DJ.

One of the hardest parts of creating these battles is allowing favortism. I mean, the Ladies First concept was a definite plus and it just so happens the woman in this photo couldn't quite figure out why I was so obsessed with getting the right with her. She still probably didn't figure out that I was the one the people who helped put the darn thing together.
